My life as a vegetarian

Updated: Mar 30, 2020

On January 1st 2014, I became a vegetarian. What started as a New Years Resolution that absolutely no one around me believed I would follow through with, became a huge part of my identity for almost six years. I have always taken my health very seriously, I exercise almost every day (check out my at-home workout recommendations), and I wanted to see if vegetarianism worked for me. I broke my vegetarianism in November of 2019 (unfortunately I did not keep track of the exact date) on bacon. It was definitely worth it.

At first, being a vegetarian was insanely difficult, but over time, the appeal of meat completely disappeared. It literally repulsed me. I genuinely thought I would never eat meat again, and everyone always asked me the typical “Don’t you miss it?” And I would say “No… if I did I would eat it.”

The truth is it is not that hard to be a vegetarian – if you actually want to be. There are amazing brands like Yves and SOL that have a huge variety of foods that actually taste good. If it wasn’t for brands like these, I really don’t think I’d have made it so long.

So why did I break it? Truthfully it was kind of sad. I did feel like I had put all this work into nothing. But what people don’t tell you about being vegetarian/vegan is how difficult it is to go to restaurants, others houses for dinner or how annoying it is when you’re sharing food. Not every restaurant has vegetarian options, and at some point the plain cheese/bread combinations get boring (lets be honest, no one is getting a salad every time they go for food). I always felt so bad when I went to friend’s houses or cottages and the main course was meat. It’s awkward!

Something I also completely forgot is how filling meat is. I was always hungry. My life felt like a never-ending flow of carbs. There are obviously other proteins, but how much fish can you really eat?

At some point in the last year I started wondering what it would be like to switch back. One night in November, my friends were making bacon, and I impulsively tried it. Now I’m never going back!

I want to point out that this is just my personal view – anyone who is a vegetarian or vegan, I support that 100%! Any dietary restriction is up to the individual and this post is not intended to sway anyone in either direction. Just sharing my experiences!

xoxo
